ISSUE 14 15th JANUARY 2008

I did say during the newsletter that I might try a new venue for pike but this was not too be and because of success on Spade Oak just after Christmas I went back on the cottage bank and see if I can repeat my success but alas it was not to be and suffered another Piking blank but the main theme this newsletter is what is happening in the Airflow angling club. After the AGM last Thursday the match fixtures came out and what a good job Dick Shillito has done organising the venues as there is a real mix to suit every taste from the ussual Carp puddles to the finer art of Canal fishing and even a couple of rivers thrown in to boot WELL DONE DICK!!!!

WRAYSBURY No 2 PIT
If you are a speciman hunter and like venturing into the Unknown this is the water for you Wraysbury 2 pit is a huge 140acre pit and quite exposed to the elements. This venue is more ideal for the specimen hunter rather than the match/pleasure angler due of the low stock density. It is quite famous as predator water with Pike abounding which can be upto around the 30lb mark.Perch too can reach specimen proportions and can reach up to around 4lb.There are many bays and down one end a feeder stream goes into the lake and this is a known pike hotspot This lake is also dotted with islands in places and these seem to be a hotspot for the lakes big carp which can reach and go over 40lb.Also on offer are Tench and bream although with tench there are not many of them and these can reach huge proportions and those that are in there could well reach double figures along with the bream.Eels too can reach good sizes . TIP!!! If you fish there for the first time spend a good hour walking around the venue and look for fish holding areas and take a marker rod and search for any features as this is a hard water and only the angler with patience will be rewarded and expect the blanks but when a Carp ot Tench does come along it will be worth talking about . TIP!!! wraysbury 2 is an excellent pike fishery during the winter months fish swims down the station end of the lake where the feeder stream enters upto six fish a session is possible PERMITS.. Controlled by cemex and season permits are available and cost around £40 which allows night fishing also available on cemex group permits which cover other venues and you can use 4 rods on this pit as well

TALES FROM THE ARCHIVE
RIVER COLNE UXBRIDGE FEBRUARY 1992
It was quite a mild late February day in 1992 when me and a friend who I used to work with at Broadway tyres Keith Tabram and his young son Stephen who was around 8 years old at the time met up in the dog & Ducks car park for a river session on the river Colne we all headed off across the field which had some horses in which sometimes would follow us but would stop if we looked round. When we got to our chosen swims I had elected to fish below the little weir and Kieth and his son just one swim above the weir but what we didn’t know was that it was to be a very interesting session.I was first to catch a bream of around 4lb on feeder fished maggots on the far side of the whitewater in a nice little back eddy after weighing and returning it Kieth son Stephen was seen with his dad doing battle with something a little more powerful and it proved to be a nice chub of around 5lb and to see Stephens face light up upon his dad weighing the fish.Throughout the session I was catching good bream from the back eddy and took four fish that day but above the weir Kieth and his lad were catching big chub all close in with ledgered bread fished against a snag. It was such a strange session that I had found bream below the weir and Kieth found big chub above the weir and the session always stuck in the mind and the big smile on Stephens face said it all.It was the biggest brace of Chub he had ever seen

HEADLINE….GENERALY MILD
Temperatures …Slightly above average Rainfall… Around average
Generaly February looks to be a rather mild month overall and despite a bitter cold spell on the first two days it looks like the Atlantic will dominate things in February although rain amounts in the South will be around average but well above in northern parts of the U.K this mild theme will continue til mid month when a northerly blast from the Arctic will give again some cold weather but again this will be shortlived. After that cold period we could have a dry settled spell as high pressure builds close to the U.K but even this will not be especialy cold. The end of the month looks to be mild or very mild but also rather wet and flooding again is a real possibility
APPRAISAL FOR JANUARY… Almost spot on!!! BUT only in the north I said average temperatures but with some short cold spells and significant snowfalls from time to time and this is what happened LESS accurate in the south though as it was exceptionaly mild with rainfall and temps well above average but the Winter forecast is panning out to be quite good as I did say on December 1st that it would be another mild one

GRAND UNION WENDOVER ARM GAMNEL BRIDGE
This is a very productive stretch of canal from the Tringford pumping station to its confluence in the main Canal at Bulbourne run by tring anglers on a day or season ticket. This canal fishery was an excellent mixed fishery with good Roach bags taken constantly and good bream could also be had along with the occasional carp, tench and chub but the specimen claim to fame was the big perch which topped 3lb if you could get through the smaller fish. This is a flowing pound with water being pumped from the station. The sewage outflow and the pumping station are real hotspots here.I have not fished here for many years but I believe I have not finished there yet!!!
