ISSUE 18 31ST MARCH 2008

I will start this newsletter with an apology as it seems the chairman had trouble pasting a picture of a 5lb 12oz Chubb on the last edition of this newsletter so I have made it a little smaller so it can be copied and pasted. On the fishing front during the very cold Easter weekend I decided to strip the reels of line and replace them and service the reels.Last weekend I fished the last winter league match of airflow angling club on Cheriton farm in what could be described as appaling weather with wind and rain blowing straight to my peg and abandoned any attempts to put a brolley so myself and Carl Sullivan just had to endure the session without a brolley

MEDMENHAM BACKARM
A very interesting stretch of water just off the River Thames at Medmenham this shallow backwater which runs for about 1mile is fishable on a Marlow A.C season ticket this fishery is ideal for all wether you are a match angler as roach abound in this fishery and catches of Tench and Bream also prolific
Pleasure anglers floatfishing can good quantitys of the above species along with some Crucian Carp. For the Speciman hunter Big Carp to about 30lb are a realistic target. In the last few years some Big Bream have also shown to around the 8lb mark and Crucians to around the 2lb have also made an appearance. This super fishery fishes best during the Spring months as it can get a little weedy during the summer months. In recent years the fishery has received some dredging to make the venue a little deeper and some deep areas can be found at the entrance with depths down to around five foot in places where as it is only mere inches in other areas TIP!!!! night fishing is allowed and it is this period that tends to produce the big Carp and the bigger Bream. TIP!!!! Always try alternative baits here for the Carp as they have a liking for sweetcorn rather than boilies and sweetcorn is an excellent bait down on the arm for other species as.Pike are also present in this fishery and anglers spinning during the colder months can have some good sport here

HITCHAM PONDS MARCH 1993
In March 1993 a group of us at Broadway tyres decided to fish on the bottom Pond at hitcham myself,Phil Hancock,Brian Scrivenor,Russel Jones and Kieth Tabram with his young son Stephen. When we all got there on a mild overcast morning without a breath of wind the water was gin clear and probably so small it only had around five or six swims on the pond.We were all fishing away when Russel drew first blood with a Jack Pike of around 3lb which took double red maggot then it was my turn with a very hard fighting Perch which looked around 2lb but after a while without any action at all Phil hooked into what looked like a good fish which he promptly landed and at first we thought he landed a good Chubb and we all said it was a chubb but upon closer inspection saw that the mouth on this fish was quite small and because there was the occassional grass carp in there we decided it was a grass carp.Enclosed is the picture below (sorry about the quality)

HEADLINE.. CHILLY AT TIMES
TEMPERATURES.. SLIGHTLY BELOW AVERAGE
RAINFALL.. SLIGHTLY BELOW AVERAGE
THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH WILL FEEL QUITE SPRING LIKE AS THE AZORES HIGH EXPANDS AND COULD SOME GOOD SPELLS OF SPRING SUNSHINE.BUT BY THE WEEKEND THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL MOVE OUT TO THE WEST OF IRELAND AND GIVE US ANOTHER COLD BLAST FROM THE ARCTIC WHICH COULD GIVE SOME WINTRY SHOWERS OF RAIN SLEET OR SNOW. BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK THE ATLANTIC COULD TAKE OVER AGAIN TO GIVE MILDER WEATHER ALTHOUGH RAIN FALL AMOUNTS WILL BE QUITE LOW. FOR THE REST OF THE MONTH THERE MAY WELL BE FREQUENT NORTHERLYS GIVING US A TASTE OF WINTER FROM TIME TO TIME.THIS WILL BE INTERUPTED AT TIMES AS ATLANTIC FRONTS CROSS FROM THE WEST AGAIN RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD BE QUITE SMALL IN THE SOUTH EAST.BY THE END OF THE MONTH THE AZORES HIGH MAY WELL BUILD GIVING US A SUMMERY LIKE END TO THE MONTH

FARLOWS LAKE
During the early eightys I started fishing Boyer Leisures Farlows lake it was afascinating water fishable on either a season or day ticket and a couple of islands one named scotts. This lake had many specimans inc Big Carp,Tench,Bream and some huge Perch and Pike which abound There were many night sessions there with food always served from herons point which also contained a tackle shop.I never fish there now and to be honest with so many other waters around doubt if I will return. The crowds back then and now were horrendous and very pressured as it also was thirty years ago so nothing has change there except they have made one part a match lake and another a junior pool
