ISSUE 22 8th JUNE 2008

I am glad to say that the so called lean spell has come to an end as the first long stay session a three day stint on Burghfield main lake started frustratingly slowly and nothing was caught but a member of the Tenchfishers fished in the next swim on the Friday and pulled out four Tench biggest 8lb 14oz and all spawned out females and was realy privelidged to witness his fish.I suppose I cheated a bit and fished in that swim and just took the rods and pod e.t.c in that swim and fished for a good six hours and that worked for me as I took two male fish of 5lb 4oz & 6lb 2oz and lost what I would say could only have been a carp.I went on to take a 6lb 3oz Bream the following night in my own swim. I also went to Yateley pumphouse for some easy!! Tench fishing but proved anything but with only a small male of around 2lb.I have just come back from a two nighter from Spade Oak on the railway bank and although the Tench did not show I did take two bream biggest 6lb 13oz plus two Eels biggest 2lb and also a surprise Roach/Bream Hybrid of 2lb approx.Well done to Michael who took his first ever Bream of 5lb and also to CARL SULLIVAN for his 15lb Common Carp from the rather tricky Westhorpe Pit

6lb 3oz Bream taken on 6lb 2oz Male Tench I poached Burghfield main lake in Alsation

YATELEY SUMMER PIT

This one a half acre small gravel pit is on the Cemex Yateley complex is a venue for both the specimen hunter and pleasure angler and this venue is best known for its potential record breaking CRUCIAN CARP which go above the four pound mark and did claim the british record at one time.Tench are also plentiful here and reach a top weight of 8lb.The usual very light float works well and this venues Crucian are no exception and usualy give very shy bites so don’t fish heavy TIP!!! Try bread dipped in cranberry flavouring also be aware when fishing very light gear that the Tench could move in at any time TIP!!! Do NOT use maggot here as you will be bitted out by tiny rudd use corn or bread and you will not have problems with them.Night fishing is NOT allowed here unless you are in possesion of a Yateley night permit All permit for Yateley are avilable to all and there is no waiting list so if you want to catch record breaking Crucians head for Yateley summer pit NOW!!!!

HEADLINE…TYPICAL ENGLISH SUMMER OVERVIEW… A Typical English summer seems likely it wont be particularly Hot but we will not have a repeat of last years very wet summer either.Temperatures are expected to be average or slightly above with rainfall around average
JUNE… The first half of the month looks likely to be rather mixed with some rain or showers at times. Through this period we expect conditions in southern and central areas to progressively improve. Temperatures are expected to trend above average, with the chance of warm conditions at times.
The second half of June may well bring a good deal of fine and very warm weather to much of the UK. Less settled conditions further north and west are likely at times, and these may briefly extend to other parts of the UK at times..
TEMPS..Slightly above average RAINFALL.. Slightly below average
JULY… The first half of the month is likely to bring rather changeable conditions with some rain or showers affecting all areas at times. Fairly typical conditions are likely, with southern areas seeing less rain and higher temperatures than the north.
During the second half of the month high pressure is increasingly likely to be in control of the weather across the UK, and this should give a good deal of fine and settled weather, especially in southern areas. Northern areas are likely to be less settled with rain or showers at times.
TEMPS..Slightly above average RAINFALL..Average

TALES FROM THE ARCHIVE
GRAND UNION CANAL MARSWORTH JUNE 1985
Its nearly June 16th and back in 1985 you hu8ng your rods up til June 16th after March 14th no matter wether it was stillwaters or rivers abd you were chomping at the bit by mid-May On June 15th 1985 myself and Phil Hancock thought we would start on the canal at marsworth on the white Lion stretch which you could fish back then.We arrived there around 7pm on the 15th and after a quick bevy in the white Lion we unloaded the car and arrived to find quite a few people lining the banks on a cool but sunny evening. The Tring anglers bailiff did his rounds at around 7pm and said no night fishing but we were all intending to ignore that rule.It got dark and as carp were seen feeding earlier beneath the bridge the exitment of opening night was looming then at the stroke of midnight the bells sounded at marsworth church and suddenly starlights were flying everywhere June 16th was here!!! Not a lot was happening for three hours and by that time no rods were bending but boy was it cold for mid-June and soon feet were soon shuffling and banging to keep feet warm and as the sun rose at dawn a frost soon formed and the ground was white and apart from a couple of small tench no other action was had by anybody but what was noticable because of the overnight frost and a freezing cold dawn the canal was gin clear as tap water and the bottom visible
What an opening night disaster!!! Although a angler next to us caught a Perch of around 3lb which took a liking to a lobworm fished under one of the many moored barges

BEDFONT LAKE
From 1988 – 2001 I fished a small gravel pit in Feltham middx which was a great Tench water but was more known as a big Crucian carp water with specimens reaching 3lb.One or two Carp were present along with roach rudd perch and some good Pike fishing during the winter months and one or two of these reached 30lb in weight although I do not know why but I didn’t target this species here.Boyer leisure had the fishing rights and night fishing was allowed I did have a rod stolen from this venue in 1995.I last fished this venue in 2001 for Carp. The crucians dissapeared for a while but rumours on the grapevine suggests the Crucians are making a comeback but there are now some common/crucian hybrids and I feel I have not finished with this water yet.
